Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
The San Lorenzo River flows through Santa Cruz County, starting in the Santa Cruz Mountains and draining into Monterey Bay. Its journey spans approximately 29 miles, winding through forests and urban areas alike. This river corridor is home to a variety of ecosystems, including riparian zones and floodplain forests, providing essential habitats for species such as steelhead trout and coho salmon, which are both federally listed as threatened. Historically, the river has served as a vital resource for indigenous peoples, and later, for the economic development of nearby towns in the logging and lime industries. Today, the San Lorenzo River is recognized for its recreational opportunities, including kayaking, fishing, and hiking along its banks. Efforts are ongoing to restore and protect its water quality and natural environment, promoting both conservation and recreation.
