About Point Defiance Park

Point Defiance Park is a 760-acre urban park located on a large promontory that juts into Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. The park’s geography features rugged shoreline, old-growth forests, open meadows, and stunning views of the water and Olympic Mountains. It is one of the largest urban parks in the Pacific Northwest, combining natural habitats with developed amenities. Ecologically, the park supports rich ecosystems ranging from marine shoreline with tidepools to dense coniferous forests dominated by Douglas fir, Western red cedar, and Western hemlock. Wildlife includes black-tailed deer, bald eagles, great blue herons, and occasional harbor seals visible from coastal vantage points.

Established in 1888, Point Defiance Park has a storied history beginning as a military reservation and evolving into a public green space intended to provide urban residents with access to nature. It features a variety of visitor attractions such as the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, the Rose Garden, and the historic Five Mile Drive. Recreation opportunities are plentiful, including more than 15 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, running, and mountain biking. The park’s diverse landscapes make it ideal for birdwatching, picnicking, fishing, and paddle sports along the protected bays. Visitors often enjoy panoramic views from the popular Sunset Drive and can explore extensive beach areas along Ruston Way and the Narrows Bridge.

Point Defiance Park’s combination of natural beauty, recreational diversity, and cultural landmarks makes it a treasured destination for locals and tourists seeking outdoor activities near an urban setting.
