About Melghat Tiger Reserve

Located in the Amravati district of Maharashtra, Melghat Tiger Reserve covers a significant area within the Satpura hill ranges and is part of the larger Melghat forest region. It was among the first regions declared as a tiger reserve in India in 1974 under Project Tiger. The reserve features mixed deciduous forests interspersed with teak, bamboo, and scrub, supporting diverse flora and fauna. The terrain includes rugged hills, valleys, and cliffs, providing habitat to Bengal tigers, leopards, gaur, sloth bears, and over 275 species of birds. Melghat's geography is characterized by the forested valley along the Gawilgarh mountain range, offering a variety of habitats from riverine environments to dry deciduous forests. The reserve is home to notable landmarks such as the Fort near Gawilgarh, steeped in historical importance and offering panoramic views. Visitors can engage in jeep safaris organized by the forest department, nature walks, and birdwatching excursions. The reserve’s core zone is strictly protected, while the buffer zone allows regulated tourism. Melghat’s remote location and relatively low visitor footfall make it an appealing option for wildlife enthusiasts seeking less crowded tiger sightings and tranquil forest experiences. The reserve’s management also emphasizes conservation education oriented towards local tribal communities, encouraging sustainable coexistence. Seasonal variations bring different wildlife viewing opportunities, with the post-monsoon and winter months being particularly verdant and advantageous for spotting elusive species. Overall, Melghat Tiger Reserve represents a critical habitat within Maharashtra with significant conservation value and outdoor adventure potential.
