About White River Marsh State Wildlife Area

The White River Marsh State Wildlife Area, located in Racine County, Wisconsin, encompasses approximately 1,042 acres of wetland habitat along the western shore of Lake Michigan. It protects an important community of wetlands, marshes, swamps, and upland habitats that serve as critical habitat for numerous species of migratory birds, waterfowl, and other wildlife. The area is especially renowned for its waterfowl production and provides an important resting spot along migratory pathways. Vegetation includes cattails, sedges, and various wetland plants, supporting amphibians, fish, and mammals. The adjacent White River flows through the marsh, further enhancing the wetland ecosystem's diversity. Historically, the area was once part of a much larger wetland that has been significantly reduced due to agricultural and urban development in southeastern Wisconsin. Today, the Wildlife Area is managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources with an emphasis on wetland restoration, habitat enhancement, and public outdoor recreation. Visitors can enjoy birdwatching along several observation points, hiking on designated trails, and seasonal hunting opportunities in accordance with state regulations. The marsh’s proximity to Lake Michigan also offers scenic views and access to a variety of aquatic species. The quiet environment and rich biodiversity attract both casual nature enthusiasts and serious wildlife photographers. Its conservation importance and natural beauty make White River Marsh a favored destination for outdoor recreation in the region.
