About La Crosse River State Trail

The La Crosse River State Trail stretches approximately 22 miles in western Wisconsin, running between the communities of Sparta and Onalaska. Converted from a former railroad corridor, this trail offers a mostly flat and paved surface suitable for hiking, biking, snowmobiling in winter, and cross-country skiing. The trail threads through a mix of hardwood forests, wetlands, open farmland, and small rural towns. The region is part of the Driftless Area, characterized by rolling hills and deeply carved river valleys shaped by glacial refuges that escaped glaciation during the last Ice Age. Along the route, users encounter scenic views of the La Crosse and Kickapoo Rivers, wildlife habitats supporting deer, wild turkeys, and a variety of bird species, as well as historical remnants such as old railroad bridges and restored depots. The trail’s gentle grade, averaging about 2%, makes it accessible to many users, including families and casual cyclists. Its connection to other regional trails, like the Elroy-Sparta State Trail to the north and the Great River State Trail to the south, enhances its appeal to long-distance trail travelers. Recreational opportunities abound year-round, with summer and fall offering ideal biking and hiking, while winter opens the trail to snowmobilers and cross-country skiers. Visitors appreciate the blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage, as well as access to local eateries, parks, and campgrounds near trailheads.
