About Sutherland Reservoir State Recreation Area

Located in the Cleveland National Forest near the city of Lake Elsinore in Southern California, Sutherland Reservoir State Recreation Area encompasses a 32-acre reservoir surrounded by chaparral-covered hills and oak woodlands. The reservoir was originally constructed for flood control and water conservation but has grown into a local favorite for outdoor recreation. Visitors can enjoy fishing for bass, catfish, bluegill, and trout stocked seasonally by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The reservoir also supports non-motorized boating such as kayaking and paddleboarding, providing a tranquil water experience. Trails around the area offer moderate hiking and mountain biking with views of the water and nearby mountains. The State Recreation Area is open year-round, with spring and fall being the most pleasant seasons to visit due to milder temperatures. Wildlife in the area includes deer, coyotes, various bird species, and reptiles typical of Southern California’s inland foothill ecosystems. Although on the smaller side compared to other regional parks, Sutherland Reservoir SRA serves as a convenient getaway for families and outdoor enthusiasts looking for water-based recreation close to the urban centers of Riverside County. The park has basic amenities such as picnic areas, restrooms, and a small parking lot. Visitors are encouraged to practice catch-and-release fishing and adhere to park regulations to preserve the natural environment.
