About Rifle River State Recreation Area

 

Located in northeastern Michigan near the town of Lupton, Rifle River State Recreation Area encompasses approximately 4,449 acres of mixed northern hardwood forest, wetlands, and over 13 lakes including the 405-acre Pole Lake, the area's centerpiece. Established in 1963, the recreation area was developed for its natural beauty and diverse outdoor recreation options. Visitors can enjoy nearly 22 miles of trails that weave through dense woods and along serene lakeshores, ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing during winter months. The area is particularly noted for its extensive canoeing and kayaking routes on the Rifle River, which is designated a National Wild and Scenic River, renowned for its clean, clear waters and excellent fishing for trout and bass. Camping options range from well-maintained rustic campgrounds to backpacking sites, attracting both families and more adventurous outdoor enthusiasts. Wildlife is abundant, including white-tailed deer, black bears, and a variety of bird species such as bald eagles and osprey. The historic Rifle River Fire Tower doubling as a scenic overlook provides visitors sweeping views of the forested landscape.
