About Raccoon Lake State Recreation Area

Raccoon Lake State Recreation Area surrounds Raccoon Lake, a 2,180-acre reservoir located primarily within Dallas and Polk counties in central Iowa. The area features a mix of woodland, prairie, and wetlands that support a variety of native wildlife including deer, waterfowl, and numerous fish species. Constructed in 1969 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers primarily for flood control and recreation, the lake and surrounding park have become a favorite for locals and visitors alike. It offers extensive opportunities for fishing, boating, hiking, and camping, as well as picnic areas and playgrounds for family outings. The lake’s fishery includes walleye, crappie, bass, and catfish, drawing anglers throughout the year. The park has over 15 miles of multi-use trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Seasonal activities include water sports in summer and ice fishing in winter. The park’s campgrounds provide both modern amenities and quieter primitive sites, accommodating a range of camping preferences. Visitors appreciate the combination of open water, wooded shorelines, and natural areas that create a scenic and peaceful environment. The area's proximity to Des Moines, approximately 20 miles away, makes it easily accessible while offering a highly natural setting for outdoor recreation and wildlife observation.
