About Northfield Mountain Recreation and Environmental Center

Located in the Connecticut River Valley near the town of Northfield, Massachusetts, Northfield Mountain Recreation and Environmental Center is an outdoor destination combining recreational opportunities with environmental education. The center spans over 2,500 acres atop a prominent basalt ridge formed from ancient volcanic activity. Its varied terrain includes thick forests, wetlands, and rocky ledges, providing habitat for numerous plant and animal species typical of the northeastern hardwood forest. Historically, the mountain played a role in hydroelectric power generation, with an underground pumped-storage facility operated by the utility company, entwining industrial heritage with natural surroundings. Today, visitors explore over 25 miles of multi-use trails, ideal for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. The trails wind through dense woods, open ledges with sweeping views of the Connecticut River and surrounding valley, and tranquility-rich wetlands. The Recreation and Environmental Center is also an important site for environmental education with programs focused on local ecology, geology, and conservation. Visitors can learn about sustainable trail use, native flora and fauna, and the mountain’s role in regional energy infrastructure. Popular highlights include the summit viewpoint, varied terrain suited for mountain biking, and the accessible trail systems designed to engage outdoor enthusiasts of all skill levels. Northfield Mountain’s proximity to several small towns, including Northfield, Erving, and Gill, makes it an accessible option for day trips or extended visits. The site is managed by Eversource Energy with collaboration from Massachusetts state agencies to balance recreation with resource protection.
