About Holly Recreation Area

Holly Recreation Area covers approximately 7,200 acres of mixed hardwood forests, wetlands, and glacial terrain in Oakland County, Michigan. Established in 1964 and managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, this area is a favorite spot for residents and visitors seeking outdoor recreation in close proximity to the Detroit metropolitan area. The terrain includes rolling hills, kettle lakes, and natural wetlands, supporting a variety of wildlife such as deer, wild turkeys, and many bird species. Holly Recreation Area is well-known for its extensive trail system, featuring over 16 miles of cross-country ski and hiking trails as well as trails designated for mountain biking and horseback riding. In addition, the area provides several campgrounds, group campsites, picnic areas, fishing ponds, and a dog training area, allowing for diverse outdoor activities. The recreation area is home to many smaller lakes, such as Owl Lake and Cranberry Lake, which support fishing and paddling opportunities. Visitors can explore the scenic forested landscape along clearly marked trails, or enjoy winter sports like snowshoeing and cross-country skiing when snow is abundant. The area's proximity to metro Detroit makes it a convenient escape for both day trips and extended stays. Its varied habitats and recreational facilities largely contribute to its year-round appeal for families, outdoor enthusiasts, and nature observers.
