About Fort Custer Recreation Area

 

Fort Custer Recreation Area spans over 3,000 acres in Kalamazoo and Calhoun counties of Michigan. The terrain includes rolling hills, dense hardwood and pine forests, open meadows, several small lakes and ponds, and extensive wetlands. Originally established as a military training base during World War I and II, the area was later repurposed for public recreation. Today, it draws outdoor enthusiasts with its range of recreational opportunities such as hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, fishing, and camping. The area boasts over 35 miles of well-maintained trails, including singletrack paths for mountain bikers, multi-use trails, and interpretive walking routes. Wildlife viewing is excellent, with common sightings of white-tailed deer, wild turkey, waterfowl, and various songbirds. Anglers have access to stocked lakes offering bluegill, largemouth bass, and trout. The campground provides developed campsites with modern amenities. Winter visitors can enjoy snowshoeing and cross-country skiing through scenic forest landscapes. Fort Custer also holds historical significance due to its military heritage, with remnants of military infrastructure visible and interpretive signage for visitors interested in local history. The varied ecosystems support a diverse range of flora and fauna, making it a popular destination for naturalists and outdoor recreationists alike.
