Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Wilderness State Park is located on the northern tip of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Covering over 10,000 acres, the park is a treasure trove of natural wonders featuring dense hardwood forests, sand dunes, and over 26 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. Established in 1927, the park is a haven for wildlife, offering sightings of a variety of species including the endangered piping plover and majestic bald eagles. Historical remnants of the area's past lumber industry can still be found along some trails. Recreational opportunities abound, with ample facilities for camping, hiking, fishing, and bird watching. The park is especially popular for winter sports, offering several miles of groomed cross-country ski trails. Its remote setting makes it a perfect spot for stargazing with minimal light pollution. Visitors are drawn to its secluded beaches, scenic vistas, and the diverse ecosystems that provide a habitat for various flora and fauna.
