About Scofield State Park

Scofield State Park offers a scenic reservoir setting popular for fishing, boating, and camping, providing a mix of water-based recreation and upland hiking in central Utah.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Scofield State Park is located in Carbon County, Utah, centered around the Scofield Reservoir, a large man-made lake originally constructed for irrigation and flood control. The park sits at an elevation of about 7,600 feet, featuring cooler temperatures and a high desert mountain environment dominated by pinyon-juniper woodlands and sagebrush areas. The reservoir covers approximately 2,820 surface acres and is stocked regularly with rainbow trout, tiger trout, and kokanee salmon, making it one of Utah’s premier fishing destinations. Beyond angling opportunities, the lake attracts boaters, kayakers, and paddleboarders. The park offers multiple campgrounds and day-use areas with tent and RV sites, picnic spots, and boat ramps. Nearby hiking trails provide opportunities to explore the surrounding foothills and upland terrain with views of the lake and distant mountain ranges. The reservoir was created in the early 20th century as part of the larger Carbon County water storage system, with the current dam completed in 1946. Wildlife in the area includes mule deer, bald eagles, osprey, and waterfowl. The park’s appeal lies in its blend of water activities, natural scenery, and peaceful retreat from urban centers. Scofield State Park is a favored weekend destination for residents from Salt Lake City and Provo, roughly 90 miles to the northwest. Its versatility across seasons also supports snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter months when frozen conditions prevail.
