Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Roan Mountain State Park encompasses about 2,006 acres at the base of the Roan Highlands and is part of the larger Blue Ridge Mountain range. The park is renowned for its vibrant rhododendron blooms, particularly during June, drawing visitors from around the world. It offers a mix of densely forested areas and open balds with panoramic views of the surrounding Appalachians. Recreational opportunities abound, including over twelve miles of hiking trails that navigate through lush forest and along scenic ridges. Visitors can also enjoy camping in a developed campground with modern facilities. Due to its elevation and biologically diverse habitats, the park is a hotspot for birdwatching and nature photography. Historically, the area served as a borderland between the Cherokee and European settlers, adding a cultural richness to its natural beauty.
