Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Parque Estadual da Fonte Grande is a vital conservation area located in the metropolitan region of Vitória, Espírito Santo. Established to protect an important remnant of the Atlantic Forest biome, the park spans rugged terrain and features lush tropical vegetation, including diverse flora and fauna unique to this coastal ecosystem. The park's topography includes the Fonte Grande mountain, which rises nearly 900 meters above sea level, providing one of the most spectacular vantage points in the region. Visitors can enjoy sweeping views of Vitória city, Vitória Bay, and the surrounding islands, making it a popular spot for photographers and nature lovers. Ecologically, the park shelters several rare and endangered species of plants, birds, and small mammals. Historically, the area has significance due to its role in water resource protection – particularly as a source of springs ('fonte grande' means 'great spring') – essential for the city below. Key outdoor opportunities include a network of hiking trails of varying difficulty, interpretive signage on local biodiversity, birdwatching stations, and picnic areas. The park is also valued for environmental education programs and community involvement in conservation. Its proximity to an urban center makes it accessible yet offers a tranquil natural retreat. The park encourages responsible visitation to maintain the delicate balance of the ecosystem while providing a unique outdoor experience combining nature, culture, and stunning landscapes.
