Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Paintsville Lake State Park is located in Johnson County in eastern Kentucky and centers around the 1,139-acre Paintsville Lake, a reservoir created by a dam on Paint Creek. The park covers roughly 1,000 acres of forested land featuring rolling hills typical of the Appalachian foothills. The lake provides a prime location for fishing species such as bass, crappie, and catfish, attracting anglers year-round. Boating and water sports are popular on the lake, with multiple boat ramps and a marina available for visitor use. In addition to water activities, the park offers several miles of trails that traverse mature hardwood forests with glimpses of native wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and a variety of songbirds. The park’s campground includes both tent and RV sites and cabins, making it accessible for overnight stays and longer visits. Historically, the construction of Paintsville Lake Dam in the 1980s served flood control and water quality improvement purposes for the area. Today, the park balances recreational enjoyment with conservation of its diverse habitats and tranquil setting. Visitors appreciate the park for fishing tournaments, seasonal festivals, and the peaceful atmosphere away from busier tourism hubs. Scenic overlooks provide panoramic views of the lake and surrounding forested hills. The park is also adjacent to other regional outdoor destinations, making it a key nature destination in Eastern Kentucky.
