About Oil Creek State Park

Oil Creek State Park is a historic and scenic area in Pennsylvania offering rich outdoor recreation amid rolling woodlands and waterways that played a crucial role in the birth of the petroleum industry.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Oil Creek State Park is located in northwestern Pennsylvania, covering part of Venango and Crawford counties. The park centers around Oil Creek and reclaims a landscape deeply intertwined with the origins of the American oil industry dating back to the mid-19th century, notably surrounding the Drake Well site. The park encompasses forests dominated by oaks, maples, and hemlocks supporting diverse wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and a variety of songbirds. Oil Creek flows through steep valleys and glens carved into Allegheny Plateau topography, providing scenic and accessible corridors for recreational activities. Visitors can explore numerous trails, including the famed 13-mile Oil Creek and Titusville Railroad corridor that runs adjacent to the creek, offering a glimpse of the region’s industrial past alongside natural beauty. Fishing, mountain biking, hiking, and paddling attract outdoor enthusiasts while the park’s interpretive exhibits and historical landmarks draw history buffs interested in the story of the petroleum boom. The park is recognized for its combination of outdoor leisure and heritage, including remnants of early oil wells, original wooden oil derricks, and the nearby Drake Well Museum. With campgrounds, picnic areas, and seasonal programming, it provides a well-rounded experience for day-trippers and longer-stay visitors alike. Wildlife viewing and quiet riverbank spots make it a peaceful retreat as well.
