Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Morro do Moreno State Park is located in the municipality of Vila Velha, Espírito Santo, Brazil. The park centers on Morro do Moreno, a distinctive granite inselberg rising about 170 meters (558 feet) above sea level and overlooking the Vitória Bay and the cityscape of Vila Velha. The park covers approximately 220 hectares and preserves a fragment of Atlantic Forest ecosystem, featuring native vegetation including dense forests, rocky outcrops, and rare flora species adapted to the coastal environment. Historically, Morro do Moreno has cultural importance and was once a strategic lookout point during the colonial period. Today, it serves as a vital natural area for both conservation and outdoor recreation. Visitors are drawn to the park for its extensive network of trails suitable for hiking and mountain biking, as well as its world-class rock climbing routes found on the park's granite cliffs. Several well-marked paths lead to scenic lookout points that provide breathtaking views of Vitória Bay, the nearby beaches, and Vila Velha’s urban environment. Wildlife within the park includes various bird species, small mammals, and reptiles typical of the Atlantic Forest biome. The park is a popular destination for residents and tourists seeking an accessible nature retreat close to the city, blending physical activity with remarkable scenery. Ongoing conservation efforts aim to control invasive species and protect native habitats in the face of urban encroachment and recreational pressures.
