Morning Sun State Park is located in Louisa County, Iowa, encompassing a portion of the shoreline of Lake Iowa, a reservoir formed by the Iowa River. The park provides a tranquil escape for outdoor enthusiasts in eastern Iowa, blending open water, woodlands, and well-maintained amenities. The park’s terrain is characterized by gentle rolling hills, hardwood forests, and wetlands that support a diverse range of wildlife, including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and waterfowl. It was established to preserve natural habitat alongside offering recreational access to the lake which spans over 2,700 acres. Visitors enjoy fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish, as well as engaging in boating and paddle sports on the lake itself. Additionally, over four miles of hiking and biking trails wind through shaded areas with creek crossings and scenic viewpoints. The park features a campground with modern facilities, picnic areas, playgrounds, and boat ramps. It also serves as a popular base for birdwatchers, especially during migration seasons.
