About Millerton Lake State Park

Millerton Lake State Park offers a vast reservoir surrounded by rolling hills and oak woodlands, providing abundant opportunities for water sports, camping, and hiking in central California.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Millerton Lake State Park is located in the Sierra Nevada foothills near Friant, California, adjacent to the east side of the San Joaquin Valley. The park centers around Millerton Lake, a large reservoir formed by the Friant Dam on the San Joaquin River. The lake holds 5200 acres and is surrounded by approximately 30,000 acres of parkland featuring oak and foothill pine woodlands, native chaparral, and riparian zones along its shoreline. The park’s landscape consists of gently rolling hills and open grasslands with seasonal wildflowers and native wildlife, including deer, wild turkey, and a variety of waterfowl. Historically, the area was home to the native Yokuts people before the development of the dam in the mid-20th century, which created Millerton Lake and transformed the region’s recreational potential. Today, the park is a popular destination for freshwater boating, fishing, and camping, with extensive facilities on both the north and south shores of the lake. Key recreational features include multiple campgrounds, marinas, picnic areas, and miles of trails suitable for hiking and mountain biking. Visitors are attracted to the park for its combination of water-based activities and scenic hilltop views, as well as opportunities for wildlife watching and photography. The park also serves as a base for exploring nearby natural and cultural sites, such as the historic town of Friant and the nearby Sierra Nevada foothills. Its diverse offerings and accessible location make Millerton Lake State Park a favorite for families, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a blend of water recreation and foothill landscapes.
