Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Mahoney State Park is located in eastern Nebraska, near the small town of Ashland and roughly 30 miles west of Omaha. The park covers approximately 1,100 acres along the Platte River valley, providing a mix of forested hills, prairies, and riverlands. Established in 1965, the park was created to offer accessible outdoor recreation for residents of the metropolitan area and visitors. Ecologically, Mahoney supports hardwood forests dominated by oak and hickory, alongside grassy glades and riparian zones that attract a variety of wildlife including deer, wild turkeys, and numerous songbird species. The park is family-oriented with numerous recreational amenities such as hiking and biking trails, paddleboat rentals, fishing ponds, and picnic areas. Visitors can also enjoy the Mahoney State Park Lodge and Convention Center, which provides accommodations and banquet facilities. Camping options include developed campgrounds with hookups as well as group and backpacking sites. Key landmarks include the park’s nature center, a popular fishing pond, and the varied trails that traverse scenic bluffs and river overlooks. Mahoney is also well-known for its accessibility and year-round activities, attracting visitors interested in snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter months. The park’s proximity to Omaha and Lincoln makes it a convenient outdoor retreat that balances natural beauty with comfort and convenience.
