Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Loyd Park is located on the western shore of Wright Patman Lake, a large reservoir on the Sulphur River in northeast Texas near the city of Texarkana. The area is characterized by gently rolling terrain, mixed hardwood forests, and open water habitats. Wright Patman Lake was created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for flood control, water supply, and recreational purposes. Loyd Park provides visitors with access to the lake’s clean waters, extensive shoreline, and wooded trails. The park features developed camping sites, picnic areas, a marina, fishing piers, and boat ramps. Anglers often target species such as bass, catfish, and crappie in the lake’s abundant fish population. Hikers and cyclists enjoy the shaded trails that wind through native oaks and pines, while paddlers can explore the calm coves and channels. The park's campground is popular for family outings and group events, with amenities including electric and water hookups, a pavilion, and restroom facilities. Loyd Park’s accessibility from Texarkana and other regional towns makes it a frequent weekend destination. Wildlife viewing includes sightings of white-tailed deer, raccoons, various bird species including waterfowl, and occasional bald eagles. Seasonal events and fishing tournaments contribute to the vibrant community around the park. Loyd Park’s combination of water-based recreation and forested landscape provide a relaxed atmosphere for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages.
