Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Lake Somerville State Park is located in East Texas, spanning across Burleson and Washington counties. The park centers around Lake Somerville, a 11,000-acre reservoir that provides diverse recreational opportunities, from fishing and boating to swimming and paddle sports. Surrounding the lake are over 6,000 acres of mixed pine and hardwood forest, creating an inviting habitat for wildlife and a tranquil setting for visitors. Established in 1970, the park preserves natural habitats typical of East Texas, including post oak savannah and bottomland hardwoods. It supports a broad range of wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and various migratory birds, making it a popular destination for wildlife watchers and birders. Hiking and mountain biking trails total about 30 miles, weaving through forested terrain with scenic views of the lake and occasional glimpses of wildlife. Key landmarks include the Rocky Hill hiking trail with its panoramic lake vistas and several well-maintained boat ramps for easy water access. The park includes multiple campgrounds catering to tent campers and RVs, with amenities like group camping areas and equestrian facilities. Visitors also find picnic areas and playgrounds, making it a favorite spot for families and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Seasonal events such as fishing tournaments and nature programs provide additional engagement opportunities.
