Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Lake Icaria State Park is located in southwestern Iowa near the town of Corning and centers around the 650-acre Lake Icaria reservoir. The park spans over 1,600 acres of rolling hills, woodlands, and grasslands, providing diverse habitats that support local wildlife including deer, waterfowl, and songbirds. Constructed in the 1960s as a flood control and recreational reservoir, the lake and surrounding park quickly became a popular destination for outdoor activities. The park features a well-developed trail system with more than 17 miles of multi-use paths suitable for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. Anglers can enjoy excellent fishing opportunities for species such as largemouth bass, crappie, and channel catfish. Boating is popular with a full-service marina and multiple boat ramps available. Several campgrounds provide both modern electrical hookups and primitive sites, with amenities such as shower facilities and picnic areas. Notable landmarks include the Spillway Overlook, offering scenic views of the dam and lake, and the Horseshoe Bend area, known for its birdwatching. The park attracts visitors year-round, with winter activities including ice fishing and cross-country skiing. Its combination of natural beauty, recreational diversity, and family-friendly facilities make Lake Icaria State Park a treasured Iowa destination.
