Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Lake Carlos State Park, established in 1937 and located near Alexandria, Minnesota, encompasses over 900 acres around the northern and western shores of Lake Carlos. The park features a diverse mix of forest types including oak, maple, and basswood, providing habitat for a variety of wildlife such as white-tailed deer, foxes, and several bird species. Established during the era of New Deal conservation efforts, Lake Carlos State Park features historic cabins built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) which continue to host visitors today. In addition to water recreation, winter sports such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are popular in the colder months.
