Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Hillsdale State Park is located in Miami County, Kansas, adjacent to the 4,580-acre Hillsdale Lake managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The park spans a diverse landscape of rolling hills, hardwood forests, prairie grasses, and the expansive lake shoreline. The area's ecology supports a variety of wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, coyotes, and numerous migratory bird species, making it a favored spot for wildlife observation. Established in 1994, the park offers a variety of recreational activities such as hiking and mountain biking on several trails, multi-use camping facilities, seasonal hunting, boating, fishing for species like crappie and catfish, and picnicking. Hillsdale Lake serves as a regional hub for water-based recreation, including kayaking and canoeing. The park's scenic vistas, combined with well-maintained amenities like boat ramps, picnic shelters, and campgrounds, attract visitors from nearby urban areas. Notable landmarks include the scenic overlooks along hiking trails and the dam structure at Hillsdale Lake.
