About Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park

Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park is Arizona’s largest and oldest botanical garden, renowned for its extensive collection of desert plants and scenic hiking trails.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park, located approximately 40 miles east of Phoenix near Superior, Arizona, covers 392 acres along the rugged Queen Creek Canyon in the Sonoran Desert. Founded in 1924 by mining millionaire William Boyce Thompson, the arboretum was established as a living museum to showcase drought-tolerant and desert-adapted plants from around the world. Today, it features over 3,200 species of desert plants, including cacti, succulents, trees, and shrubs from six continents, making it one of the premier botanical collections in the southwestern United States. The park’s geography includes canyon walls, riparian areas, and desert basins that create a variety of microclimates and habitats. Visitors can explore extensive walking trails that wind through themed gardens, natural desert environment zones, and experimental plantings. Popular hike options include the Three Falls Trail and the Arboretum Loop Trail, which offer spectacular views of the canyon and the Sonoran Desert landscape. Birdwatching is a major activity here, as the arboretum attracts many bird species, including orioles, hummingbirds, and hawks. The park’s visitor center features educational exhibits, a gift shop, and a shaded picnic area. The arboretum also hosts seasonal events, plant sales, and guided tours that focus on desert ecology, conservation, and horticulture. Outdoor enthusiasts appreciate the combination of botanical diversity, desert scenery, and accessible nature trails. Its unique blend of natural beauty and horticultural enrichment makes Boyce Thompson Arboretum a distinctive destination for both casual visitors and desert plant enthusiasts.
