Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Located in south-central Pennsylvania, Blue Knob State Park covers rugged terrain on the summit of Blue Knob, the second highest mountain in the state at 3,146 feet. The park spans areas within Bedford, Blair, and Huntingdon counties and features a mix of dense hardwood forests, meadows, and streams that provide rich habitat for wildlife including black bears, white-tailed deer, and various bird species. Established in 1920, the park has grown into a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy over 35 miles of trails winding through steep ridges and forested valleys, suited for hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing. The Blue Knob Ski Area, located within the park, is one of Pennsylvania's premier ski resorts offering alpine skiing and snowboarding with 34 slopes. In addition to winter sports, the park also provides fishing opportunities in the park’s several small lakes and streams. Facilities include campgrounds with both modern amenities and primitive options, picnic areas, a swimming pool, and scenic overlooks. The summit offers panoramic views of the surrounding Appalachian Mountains, including glimpses of the Allegheny Front. The park’s combination of high elevation, natural beauty, and outdoor activities draws a steady stream of visitors year-round. Programs and events hosted by the park rangers promote natural history education and stewardship of the area’s resources.
