About Utah Lake State Park

Utah Lake State Park

Utah Lake State Park is located along the eastern shore of Utah Lake, just southwest of Provo, Utah. The park centers around the expansive 148,000-acre Utah Lake, a shallow freshwater lake situated at an elevation of 4,501 feet. The lake and surrounding wetlands create a unique habitat supporting a variety of fish species, migrating birds, and plants adapted to wetland and freshwater environments. Established in 1970, the park covers approximately 308 acres designed for recreation and conservation. It includes boat ramps, picnic areas, and campgrounds, catering especially to anglers seeking species like largemouth bass, yellow perch, and catfish. Apart from fishing, visitors enjoy water sports such as kayaking, paddleboarding, and sailing, as well as birdwatching during migratory seasons—nearly 250 bird species have been recorded here. The park also features open grassy areas and short trails suitable for hiking and wildlife viewing. Historically, Utah Lake has been important to Native American peoples, particularly the Ute tribe, and later to Mormon settlers utilizing its resources for irrigation and transportation. With its proximity to urban centers like Provo and Orem, Utah Lake State Park provides accessible outdoor recreation for day users and campers. The mix of water activities, natural habitats, and opportunities for relaxation appeals to anglers, families, bird enthusiasts, and casual visitors. The flat terrain combined with lake views creates a welcoming environment for outdoor gatherings and sunset photography.
