About Van Damme State Park

Van Damme State Park is located along the Mendocino County coastline in Northern California, spanning approximately three miles of rugged Pacific coastline and lush inland forest. The park features a diverse landscape including coastal bluffs, secluded sandy beaches, a fern canyon, and mixed hardwood and redwood forests. Its centerpiece is the Little River Trail, which follows the Little River through a scenic fern canyon with towering Douglas firs and Western sword ferns, making it a favored spot for nature lovers and photographers. The park's ecosystems support a range of wildlife including black-tailed deer, raccoons, numerous bird species, and tidepool invertebrates. Historically, the area was logged in the late 19th century, and the park was established in 1934 to protect the remaining coastal redwoods and marine terraces. Visitors can enjoy hiking, mountain biking on designated trails, picnicking, camping at the on-site developed campground, fishing, and exploring tide pools along the shore. Nearby landmarks include the town of Mendocino to the north and the Fern Canyon Natural Preserve within the park boundary. The park's combination of ocean views, forest scenery, and well-maintained trails creates a peaceful and accessible outdoor destination year-round.
