About McConnells Mill State Park

Located in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, McConnells Mill State Park covers over 2,500 acres of forested land carved by the Slippery Rock Creek. The park is known for its impressive sandstone gorge, which cuts through the landscape, exposing rock formations and creating opportunities for hiking, rock climbing, and trout fishing. The gorge features rapid waters and scenic waterfalls such as Slippery Rock Falls and Hell's Hollow Falls. The park's landscape consists predominantly of mixed hardwood forests, supporting diverse wildlife including white-tailed deer, black bears, and numerous bird species. Historically, McConnells Mill was the site of a water-powered gristmill, operational in the 19th and early 20th centuries; the restored mill and covered bridges remain popular landmarks and reminders of the area's industrial past. Popular recreational activities include hiking along more than 14 miles of trails, exploring the scenic covered bridges, rock climbing on steep sandstone cliffs, and kayaking or fishing in the creek's wild waters. With its combination of natural and cultural features, McConnells Mill State Park draws visitors interested in outdoor sports, nature observation, and regional history. The park also provides picnic areas and a small visitor center with interpretive exhibits. Its rugged terrain and scenic vistas offer a rewarding experience through Pennsylvania’s Appalachian foothills.
