About Soudan Underground Mine State Park

Soudan Underground Mine State Park is located near the town of Soudan in northeastern Minnesota. It protects the site of Minnesota’s first iron ore mine, which operated from 1882 until 1962 at a depth of nearly 2,400 feet underground. The park covers a landscape shaped by mining history, with forested hills, rugged terrain, and trails connecting historical sites. Visitors can descend almost half a mile underground on guided tours that provide a rare look at the old mine shafts, timbering, mining machinery, and geology. Above ground, the park contains hiking and biking trails passing through northern hardwood and boreal forest ecosystems. The surrounding forests feature native trees like maples, birches, aspens, and pines, supporting wildlife such as white-tailed deer, black bears, and various bird species. The park also has a visitor center with mining exhibits and interpretive displays about the history and geology of the Soudan Mine and the Mesabi Iron Range. Outdoor recreation includes hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing in winter. Soudan Underground Mine State Park is notable for its mining heritage, educational programs, and one-of-a-kind underground tours that attract visitors interested in industrial history and unique adventure experiences. The park combines natural beauty with historical significance, making it a compelling destination for families, history buffs, and outdoor enthusiasts.
