About Santee State Park

Santee State Park is located in Clarendon County, South Carolina, along the northern shores of Lake Marion, the largest lake in South Carolina and one of the largest man-made lakes in the United States. The park spans over 2,500 acres of forested lands and waterfront areas, combining hardwood and pine forests that provide habitat for a variety of wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and numerous songbirds. Founded in 1942, the park was developed as part of the Santee Cooper electric project and has since become a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts across the region. Visitors can explore over 5 miles of well-maintained hiking and biking trails that wind through pine forests and along lake shores, offering scenic vistas and opportunities for wildlife observation. The park’s marina provides access to Lake Marion’s extensive waterway, allowing for boating, kayaking, and excellent fishing, with species like largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish common in the waters. Campers can choose from developed campgrounds with modern amenities or primitive sites closer to the water, making it suitable for a variety of camping styles. The park features a bike rental service, picnic shelters, playgrounds, and a nature center that hosts educational programs. Santee State Park appeals to families, anglers, paddlers, and hikers seeking a natural lakeside setting with convenient access from Interstate 95. Its combination of water activities, forest trails, and wildlife viewing makes it an inviting year-round destination for outdoor recreation in South Carolina.
