About Saltwater State Park

Saltwater State Park, located in Des Moines, Washington, spans 137 acres of forested land and beach frontage on the eastern shores of Puget Sound. This park features rugged sandstone cliffs, tide pools teeming with marine life, and dense Douglas fir forests. The area was historically inhabited by Coast Salish peoples before becoming a popular recreational site. Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities including hiking along the Overlook Loop Trail, exploring the underwater world via snorkeling and scuba diving near its rocky shoreline, and beachcombing along its sandy shores. Saltwater State Park is also home to a saltwater swimming pool constructed in the early 20th century and several picnic areas with stunning views of the Olympic Mountains. The park’s diverse habitats sustain numerous wildlife species such as bald eagles, raccoons, and harbor seals visible offshore. Saltwater’s proximity to Seattle and Tacoma makes it a favored destination for locals and tourists alike seeking a natural coastal experience without a long commute. Despite being relatively compact, the park offers a rich mix of forest, marine, and intertidal ecosystems that attract nature enthusiasts year-round. Saltwater State Park remains a valuable green space providing both passive and active recreation opportunities while protecting critical shoreline environments.
