About Sakatah Lake State Park

Sakatah Lake State Park is located in Rice County, Minnesota, along the Cannon River and surrounds the 842-acre Sakatah Lake, a reservoir formed by a dam on the river. The park features wooded areas, wetlands, and gently rolling terrain typical of the Eastern Broadleaf Forest region. It supports diverse habitats including mixed hardwood forests, prairie remnants, and aquatic environments that attract a variety of wildlife species such as white-tailed deer, beavers, various waterfowl, and migratory birds. The park’s history is closely tied to the Native American Dakota people and later European American settlers who utilized the area's natural resources and river for transportation and milling. Developed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in 1963, the park now serves as a popular destination for fishing, boating, and watersports on Sakatah Lake, as well as hiking and mountain biking along the Sakatah Singing Hills State Trail, which runs adjacent to the park. The trail follows the route of a former railroad and connects Mankato and Faribault, attracting cyclists and hikers from around the region. Campgrounds with modern amenities provide opportunities for comfortable overnight stays in a natural setting. Visitors can enjoy birdwatching, picnicking, and winter sports such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The park's peaceful environment and accessibility from the Twin Cities make it a favored spot for families and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a variety of recreational activities within a manageable drive.
