About Rough River State Park

Rough River State Park is located in north-central Kentucky, encompassing portions of Breckinridge and Grayson counties. Centered around Rough River Lake, a 5,100-acre reservoir created for flood control and recreation, the park provides a diverse outdoor experience combining water activities, forest habitats, and developed amenities. The area is characterized by rolling hills, hardwood forests dominated by oak, hickory, and maple, as well as wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and various songbirds. Historically, the region was part of early Kentucky frontier settlements before the lake and park were established in the mid-20th century. Visitors can explore miles of hiking and mountain biking trails winding through the woods, relax at one of the seven boat ramps, fish for bass and catfish, or camp at well-maintained sites surrounded by nature. Notable landmarks include the lakeshore vistas and the Rough River Dam, a key structure in the area's flood-control system. The park is a popular destination for family outings, water sports, bird watching, and seasonal festivals, offering abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation in a tranquil setting.
