About Rosebud Battlefield State Park

Rosebud Battlefield State Park is located in Big Horn County, Montana, and commemorates the June 17, 1876 battle fought between General George Crook’s U.S. Army forces and a coalition of Lakota Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors led by Chief Crazy Horse. The battlefield sprawls across open plains and gentle hills characteristic of the Northern Plains ecosystem, providing a glimpse into the natural and cultural history of the late 19th century American West. The park features a visitor center with exhibits on the battle, Native American culture, and military history, as well as restored features such as battlefield markers and a memorial obelisk. Visitors can explore interpretive walking trails that traverse the landscape where the battle unfolded, enabling a tangible connection to this historic event. The area supports a variety of prairie grasses and native plants, which in turn provide habitat for local wildlife including mule deer, pronghorn, coyotes, and numerous bird species. While the park’s main draw is its rich historical context, visitors can also enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, wildlife viewing, and picnicking amid wide-open skies and scenic views. Its location along U.S. Highway 12 makes it accessible for those exploring Montana’s Battlefields and nearby Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, expanding its appeal to history buffs and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
