Rib Mountain State Park offers a striking granite hill rising sharply above the surrounding landscape, providing excellent hiking, skiing, and panoramic views near Wausau, Wisconsin.
Rib Mountain State Park is centered around Rib Mountain, one of the highest points in Wisconsin, rising approximately 1,942 feet above sea level with a prominence of about 750 feet above the surrounding terrain. The park covers a ridge composed primarily of quartzite rock, a resistant material that has preserved this unique geological feature. The park’s mixed hardwood and pine forests support diverse wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and an assortment of songbirds. Historically, the mountain and surrounding lands were exploited for quartzite quarrying but later preserved as a public recreation area in 1927. Today, it features well-maintained hiking trails, a scenic overlook at the summit with a fire tower, and a downhill ski area with chairlifts operated by Granite Peak Ski Area, one of the oldest ski resorts in the country. Visitors can explore cross-country ski trails in winter or bike and hike the extensive trail network during warmer months. The summit provides panoramic views stretching across the Wisconsin River valley and the city of Wausau. The park is a popular destination for local outdoor enthusiasts due to its proximity to urban amenities and its vibrant recreational opportunities year-round.
