About Reelfoot Lake State Park

Reelfoot Lake State Park is located in Lake and Obion counties in northwest Tennessee, surrounding Reelfoot Lake—a shallow natural lake created by the 1811–1812 New Madrid earthquakes. The lake spans approximately 15,000 acres, with the state park managing roughly 2,200 of those acres. The area features a rich floodplain ecosystem, including bald cypress swamps, tupelo trees, and hardwood forests, providing critical habitat for diverse wildlife such as American bald eagles, great blue herons, and numerous fish species. The lake is renowned for its excellent crappie fishing and paddle sports opportunities. Visitors can explore miles of calm waterways by canoe or kayak, hike boardwalk trails that wind through the wetland forest, or enjoy birdwatching and wildlife photography. The park also contains the Lake Reelfoot Museum, offering insights into the region's geology, ecology, and Native American history. Historically, the lake area was inhabited by Chickasaw and other Indigenous peoples, and the creation of the lake dramatically reshaped the local landscape. Reelfoot Lake State Park is a popular destination for anglers, nature lovers, and those seeking quiet recreation amidst a rare and fragile wetland ecosystem unique to the Tennessee Valley. Facilities include boat ramps, picnic areas, campgrounds, and educational programs, making it accessible for families and outdoor adventurers alike.
