About Pymatuning State Park

Pymatuning State Park is located in Crawford and Mercer counties in northwestern Pennsylvania, centered around the 17,088-acre Pymatuning Reservoir, one of the largest man-made lakes in Pennsylvania. The park's landscape features rolling woodlands, wetlands, and shorelines that create diverse habitats for aquatic and terrestrial wildlife. The reservoir was created in the 1930s by damming the Shenango River and was originally developed for flood control, water supply, and recreation. Today, it is a favorite destination for anglers seeking diverse fish species such as walleye, muskellunge, crappie, and perch. The park offers over 3,000 acres of land for camping, picnicking, and hiking, while its extensive water surface provides ample space for boating, paddle sports, and ice fishing during winter months. Key landmarks include the Pymatuning Spillway, a concrete causeway known for its picturesque views and the chance to see large flocks of migratory birds, especially during spring and fall. The park also features family-friendly beaches, fishing piers, boat launches, and playgrounds, attracting visitors year-round. The combination of accessible trails, well-maintained campgrounds, and multiple recreational facilities makes Pymatuning State Park a popular outdoor destination for both day use and extended stays. Migratory waterfowl, white-tailed deer, and other wildlife add to the natural allure of the park, providing excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography.
