About Prince Gallitzin State Park

Located in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, Prince Gallitzin State Park encompasses approximately 6,249 acres of forested hills, rolling terrain, and the 1,634-acre Glendale Lake. The park's landscape is part of the Allegheny Plateau, characterized by mixed hardwood forests dominated by oak, maple, and hickory species. Wildlife is abundant and includes white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and a variety of songbirds, making it a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts and bird watchers. The park was established in 1965 primarily through the damming of Blacklick Creek, creating Glendale Lake, which supports fishing, boating, and paddle sports. Visitors enjoy fishing for muskellunge, bass, and trout, while seasonal opportunities for ice fishing and snow sports add to its year-round appeal. There are 25 miles of maintained hiking and mountain biking trails, including paths that offer scenic overlooks and connect to primitive campsites. The park also has a large developed campground and modern facilities for picnicking and group gatherings. Historical sites in the area include remnants of early 19th-century settler activity and its namesake, Prince Demetrius Gallitzin, a Russian nobleman and Catholic missionary influential in Pennsylvania’s early history. The park’s mix of water recreation, forested trails, and campground infrastructure makes it a favored destination for families, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts seeking both active and relaxing pursuits within striking distance of Altoona and other regional towns.
