About P.J. Hoffmaster State Park

P.J. Hoffmaster State Park, located along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan in Muskegon County, Michigan, spans approximately 1,200 acres and is renowned for its large sand dunes, beaches, and mixed hardwood-conifer forests. The park's geography features dramatic dune formations rising up to 240 feet above the lake, providing visitors with panoramic views of the lake and surrounding landscape. Ecologically, Hoffmaster supports a variety of dune and forest habitats with unique plant species such as bearberry, lady's slipper orchids, and various wildflowers that bloom in the spring and summer. Wildlife includes white-tailed deer, red foxes, migratory birds, and occasional sightings of coyotes. The park is named after Percy James Hoffmaster, Michigan’s state parks director from 1921 to 1951, who helped expand and improve the state park system.

Visitors can enjoy a broad range of outdoor activities including hiking on over 14 miles of trails, swimming and sunbathing on the sandy beaches, birdwatching during migration seasons, and winter sports like cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Notable landmarks include the scenic Overlook Trail that ascends the massive dunes and the Hoffman Forest, which surrounds the park. The park also features picnic areas and a campground with electric and non-electric sites. Hoffmaster attracts nature enthusiasts, families, and photographers drawn to its natural beauty and accessible recreational opportunities. The park's location near Muskegon allows convenient access while maintaining a tranquil natural environment.
