About Mount Napier State Park

Mount Napier State Park is located in the Western District of Victoria, Australia, within close proximity to the town of Hamilton. The park centers around Mount Napier, the youngest volcano in Victoria, which last erupted approximately 7,000 years ago. This volcanic landmark reaches 440 meters (1,444 feet) in elevation and features a distinctive crater and extensive basalt lava flows that cover much of the surrounding area. The park spans over 2,800 acres of volcanic terrain interspersed with native bushland, providing a habitat for local wildlife including kangaroos, wallabies, and various bird species. The region exhibits a relatively dry temperate climate with clear seasonal changes that influence park conditions. Visitors can explore several walking trails that traverse ancient lava fields, volcanic cones, and woodland areas. The Mount Napier Summit Walk allows hikers to reach the summit and experience panoramic views of the surrounding plains and the crater’s rim, known as the 'Peace Tower' formed by volcanic scoria deposits. Additionally, the volcanic landscape has preserved dark caverns and lava tubes that can be examined. The park has cultural significance to the Gunditjmara people, the traditional owners of this land, who have longstanding connections to the natural environment here. Mount Napier State Park attracts geology enthusiasts, nature photographers, families seeking outdoor recreation, and those interested in Aboriginal cultural heritage. Facilities within the park include picnic areas and signage explaining the geological features. While camping is not available inside the park, nearby towns provide accommodation options. Access is primarily by car on well-maintained roads. Overall, Mount Napier State Park offers an educational and scenic experience highlighting volcanic activity in Victoria’s natural history.
