About Lake Tawakoni State Park

Lake Tawakoni State Park is located on the eastern shore of Lake Tawakoni, approximately 50 miles east of Dallas, Texas. The park covers 492 acres of forested land along the shores of this 37,879-acre reservoir, which was created in the 1960s as a water supply reservoir for the region. The area is characterized by rolling hills, mixed hardwood and pine forest, and open water, supporting diverse wildlife including deer, raccoons, foxes, and numerous bird species such as great blue herons and bald eagles. The park offers a variety of recreational activities including fishing—known for largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie—boating, hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching, and camping. Visitors can explore over 10 miles of trails that wind through woodlands and along the lake shore, providing scenic views and wildlife observation opportunities. The park also features several well-equipped camping areas with both primitive and developed sites, picnic areas, a boat ramp, and a beach for swimming. Its proximity to the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area makes it a popular weekend getaway offering peace and natural beauty, while the vast lake attracts anglers and water lovers year-round. The park’s varied habitats and quiet waters make it a favored spot for nature photographers as well as families and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a mix of water and land experiences.
