About Lake Kegonsa State Park

Located on the eastern shore of Lake Kegonsa in Dane County, Wisconsin, Lake Kegonsa State Park encompasses 1,260 acres of forested hills, wetlands, prairie remnants, and sandy beaches. The park protects a diverse landscape shaped by glacial activity, providing habitat for numerous native plants and wildlife species. The lake itself covers approximately 3,209 acres and is well-known for its clear waters and excellent fishing, including species such as largemouth bass, northern pike, bluegill, and walleye. Originally established in 1962, the park preserves scenic views of the lake and the gently rolling Driftless Area terrain. Visitors enjoy a wide array of outdoor activities including hiking on over 11 miles of trails, mountain biking, horseback riding, boating, and winter sports such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Two campgrounds offer developed sites with amenities close to the water, making it a family-friendly destination. Historic remnants within the park reflect its early agricultural and Native American presence. The park also provides naturalist programs emphasizing local ecology and conservation efforts. With its combination of aquatic and upland environments, Lake Kegonsa State Park is a popular spot for both day-use and overnight stays, attracting anglers, paddlers, and outdoor enthusiasts year-round.
