Lake Carlos State Park Adventures

Lake Carlos State Park, established in 1937 and located near Alexandria, Minnesota, encompasses over 900 acres around the northern and western shores of Lake Carlos. The park features a diverse mix of forest types including oak, maple, and basswood, providing habitat for a variety of wildlife such as white-tailed deer, foxes, and several bird species. Alongside its rich natural environment, Lake Carlos itself is a central feature offering anglers opportunities to catch multiple species including walleye, bass, and panfish. The park includes several miles of hiking trails that wind through both upland forest and lakeshore areas, as well as mountain biking trails that appeal to riders of all skill levels. Established during the era of New Deal conservation efforts, Lake Carlos State Park features historic cabins built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) which continue to host visitors today. In addition to water recreation, winter sports such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are popular in the colder months. Visitors also benefit from modern campgrounds, picnic areas, and a swimming beach providing a well-rounded outdoor experience. The park’s forested landscapes and lake access points make it a favored destination for wildlife viewing and photography, particularly during spring migration and fall foliage seasons.
