About Kokosing Gap Trail State Park Corridor

Kokosing Gap Trail State Park Corridor stretches approximately 14.5 miles from Mount Vernon through Gambier to Danville in Knox County, Ohio. The trail follows the route of a former railroad corridor paralleling the Kokosing River, one of Ohio’s designated scenic rivers. The corridor traverses a gentle landscape consisting of riparian woodlands, farmland, and small communities, offering a peaceful outdoor recreation corridor in a largely rural setting. Ecologically, the trail corridor supports diverse local flora and fauna typical of the Ohio River watershed, including mixed hardwood forests, wildflowers, and opportunities to observe native bird species and aquatic life along the river. Historically, the pathway was established along the old Toledo, Walhonding Valley, and Western Railroad line, with the rail-to-trail conversion completed in the early 1990s to provide an accessible recreational resource. Recreation-wise, the trail is predominantly surfaced with crushed limestone, making it suitable for hiking, walking, running, mountain biking, and seasonal cross-country skiing. Along the route are several small parks, rest stops, and access points, enhancing visitor convenience. Gambier, home to Kenyon College, offers cultural and historical interest nearby. The Kokosing Gap Trail is valued for its quiet scenic beauty, river views, and off-road trail experience close to communities, making it a popular destination for local residents and visitors seeking a long, accessible trail corridor in central Ohio.
