About Hawn State Park

Hawn State Park is located in the southeastern region of Missouri within the scenic St. Francois Mountains, part of the larger Ozark Plateau. Covering nearly 4,700 acres, the park preserves unique geological features such as Mississippian sandstone cliffs and rugged glades interspersed with hardwood forests. These natural environments support a variety of wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and numerous bird species. Established in 1955, the park was donated by Floyd Hawn to provide a public forested area for education and recreation. Today, it draws hikers, bird watchers, and nature lovers seeking quiet solitude and scenic views. The park contains over 12 miles of well-maintained trails, including the prominent Whispering Pines Trail which winds through diverse ecosystems and offers glimpses of abrupt sandstone bluffs and secluded glades. Visitors can explore the rocky terrain, discover wildflower meadows in spring, and enjoy the peaceful sounds of native songbirds throughout warmer months. With several primitive campsites and picnic areas, Hawn State Park balances accessibility with a sense of wilderness. The absence of motorized vehicles inside enhances the natural experience. This area appeals to those interested in geology, botany, and quiet outdoor activity, as well as local families and weekend visitors from nearby cities such as St. Louis and Cape Girardeau.
