About Hacklebarney State Park

Hacklebarney State Park covers approximately 1,250 acres in Morris County, New Jersey, featuring a forested landscape dominated by oak, maple, and hemlock trees. The park is best known for the Black River, which carves through steep rocky gorges creating picturesque waterfalls and pools. The park’s geography features rocky ridges and deep valleys formed by glacial movements and river erosion, providing diverse habitats for local wildlife including white-tailed deer, beavers, and migratory birds. Historically, Hacklebarney was named after a legendary prospector, and the area was once important for iron ore mining in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, the park offers over 15 miles of well-marked trails, including the popular Hacklebarney Loop and Black River Trail, which wind through lush forests and along the riverbanks. Visitors enjoy activities such as hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and picnicking in the designated areas. The park’s tranquil setting and accessibility from nearby urban centers make it a favorite for day trips and family outings. Notable landmarks include the Black River Gorge and the remnants of the old iron mining infrastructure. Hacklebarney State Park’s combination of natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and historical context make it a valuable protected area for outdoor enthusiasts in northern New Jersey.
