About Frances Slocum State Park

Frances Slocum State Park encompasses approximately 1,095 acres in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, surrounding the 165-acre Frances Slocum Lake. The park is located in the Appalachian Plateau region, characterized by gently rolling uplands and mixed hardwood forests dominated by oak, maple, hickory, and tulip poplar. The park was established in 1968 and named after Frances Slocum, a woman who was taken captive by a Native American tribe in the 18th century and later lived as part of the Miami people. The large man-made lake was created through damming, providing abundant fishing and boating opportunities. Visitors can enjoy various activities including hiking on multi-use trails, seasonal camping, picnicking, and winter sports such as ice fishing and cross-country skiing. The park is known for its rich wildlife, with species such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and hundreds of bird species. Trails are well-maintained, suitable for hiking and mountain biking, and offer scenic views of the lake and surrounding forested land. Frances Slocum State Park's visitor appeal lies in its combination of tranquil water recreation and forest exploration within a convenient drive from urban areas like Wilkes-Barre and Scranton. The park also includes playgrounds, boat launches, and picnic areas with pavilions, making it a family-friendly destination throughout the year.
